Blitzkrieg Box Office: Ramones Movie On the Way

A reaction to the extreme popularity of a band that produced music that itself was a reaction to the bloated pop music of the 1970s, the Ramones are headed to the big screen. Fox Searchlight, perhaps drafting behind the upcoming bio-pic of The Runaways, is developing a film based on the memoir I Slept with Joey Ramone, written by Joey's brother, Mickey Leigh and music journalist Legs McNeil. The book is due out this December.

This is not the first time - or the last - that the Ramones will be featured in a movie. There was Rock n' Roll High School back in '79, the 2004 documentary End of the Century, and Howard Stern is currently developing a remake of High School.

There's some interesting behind-the-scenes stuff about this project between Searchlight and producer Rory Rosegarten, who picked up the rights to the story while the book was being written, but all of that pales in comparison to the hell that the Ramones put each other through for about 20 years, which would no doubt play a major role in the film.

I have no opinion either way about this one being made; there are tons of musical bio-pics and there will be tons more. As influential as they were and are, if somebody sold the rights to the story, somebody sold the rights to the story.

I do think it could be a lot of fun, if diehard fans are willing to accept it. But I will say this: Not a lot of teen idols will be cast as Ramones.

This is long overdue. I'm excited to see the movie, albeit I'm certain that there will be a slant that will include a Johnny vs. Joey power struggle.
They were very important in music, and I appreciate them and all that they did! Hey ho, Let's go!
