Trailer - Oliver Stone's 'South of the Border'
Sunday, September 6, 2009 at 2:17AM
You might want to sit down before you read this: Oliver Stone has made a political movie. I know, what a surprise! His latest is the documentary South of the Border, which was apparently designed as a get-to-know-you of Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez, but then was expanded to incorporate an era of new leadership in Latin America.

Chavez is one of the most controversial figures in the world, but Stone is trying to find another part of the story. And without putting too fine a point on it, it appears to be a sympathetic portrayal of Chavez, if this trailer's any indication.
You can take a look at the trailer here, or if you happen to be in Venice in the next few hours, South of the Border is playing at the famed fall film festival there on Monday. The Hollywood Reporter says Chavez might even show up for the premiere. Gee, I hope the taxpayers aren't paying for that trip...
I'm not so sure Chavez is a big ol' teddy bear. I interviewed director Jonathan Jakubowicz about four years ago, the day Chavez pulled his film Secuestro Express from theaters in Venezuela for, among other things, showing archival footage from an anti-Chavez rally in the film, and containing dialogue critical of the president and the armed forces, so yeah, Hugo's clearly a man of the people.

Wow. I hope he asks chavez and friends some tough questions as well as simply play soccer with them. Heavy handedness by the US doesn't justify repression and intimidation at home by these guys.
----Gee ---we wonder if Chavez is at least a working class hero ---who CAME from the working class!
---unlike son of wealthy Cuban landowners -Fidel Castro ---of son of wealthy doctors Che 'Messiah-boy'
Guevara ---or son of New York stockbrokers ---Oliver Stone.
Accept NO imitations folks!!!
AMEN
