Monday, September 7, 2009 at 1:10PM Three New Interational 'Pandorum' Posters
I love all the marketing for Pandorum, which is evident to you if you've read any of our previous coverage of the film. And a movie like that needs to have memorable posters and trailers and commercials because it won't be battling on a level playing field once it hits theaters. I'm sure it will have a decent release - maybe 1,500 - 2,200 theaters - but it will never be in the 3,000 - 4,000 range. If you're in that category, it's a little more accurate to say you just need a blitz of messages rather than the exact right ones.

I think the newest TV commercials are cutting it close, though, almost giving away too much, when most of the allure of this one right now is that you don't know what the hell a Pandorum is or exactly what's happening on that space ship. You can guess, but we really aren't sure. I hope they don't get antsy and spill the beans here in the next few weeks prior to the film's September 25th debut.
Another thing you might have picked up if you've read The Big Picture for a while is my love for foreign movie posters, especially European posters and UK quads. The design is usually a little different and I'd say about half the time, it's much better work than we see in the states. Different cultures, different selling points, and audiences respond to different stimuli. Curiously, for Pandorum, a movie with great American posters, the opposite is true. There are three new international posters I found at IMP Awards...and I vote nay on two of them.
