Live-Action 'Akira' Movie On the Comeback Trail

Were we smokescreened earlier this year when it was revealed that Leonardo DiCaprio's live-action version of Akira was dead? Warner Bros. had tabled the project but now it looks like it's back on.

Collider has learned that Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus (Children of Men) are knocking out a draft of the story that will soon be turned into the studio. There are a couple other reveals from Collider's source - still post-apocalyptic Manhattan, the motocycle still revs - but the major news might be that when it goes into production it will be "one of those big event movies."

Warner Bros. can afford such a tentpole movie because it's been at the top of the studio food chain for a couple years now, and when it comes to major blockbusters, the studio hasn't missed big time in a while. Whether or not this will go into production in 2010 with a 2011 release date, which is the schedule Collider cites, I think remains to be seen. Obviously, the script needs to get the OK, and then you've got to fit it around DiCaprio's schedule, provided he's going to have anything to do with it beyond just producing the film.

If it's as big as it sounds, then this project will have a first-rate director, and the line forms to the left. That won't make things any more popular to the purists who think this film should never happen, but there's got to be a way to make this story live-action while keeping what's so cool about it, right?

Its an easier story to make live action then say DBZ
and yet as with all things, there is more then enough room to screw it up.
