Wednesday, September 9, 2009 at 11:33PM Cool 'A-Team' Rumor: 'District 9' Star as Murdock
With one role left to cast for The A-Team, all the speculation is now
centering on who will or should play "Howling Mad" Murdock for director Joe Carnahan. We're open
to your suggestions...

Blackfilm cites a source saying that District 9 star Sharlto Copley has been offered the
job. There's less confirmation than we'd like, and we wouldn't even bother with it if the rumor wasn't so interesting. I don't know how it would work in practice but in theory...hell, yeah.
Copley isn't a veteran actor; District 9 is his first film. At least, it's his first film in front of the camera. He was a visual effects guy on the New Age garbage dump that is What the #$*! Do We (K)now!?, and he wrote, produced, and directed his own flick called Spoon. But he was something of a revelation in D9, but then again, what wasn't a revelation in that film?
So even if it goes no further than being a rumor du jour, it's the kind of rumor I like. For a supporting role like Murdock, it might make more sense to go for a smaller name who really gets a chance to impress people. And District 9 was a big enough hit that this casting wouldn't derail anything.
It's not as splashy as some of the names we've heard but it might be better in the long run to go against the grain. Food for thought, at any rate.

As difficult as it was for me to watch District 9 (the shakey camera movies make me seasick), Sharlto Copley was downright impressive in that movie, especially for his first time in front of the camera. Give him a few varying roles to work with and he might become a worthwhile mainstream actor.
