Wednesday, September 9, 2009 at 8:02AM New Trailer for Disney's 'Princess and the Frog'
Is that - gasp! - hand-drawn animation? Why yes, yes it is. When Pixar officially joined Disney a few years ago (they had worked on a distribution basis for more than a decade), one thing John Lasseter wanted to do was pay homage to all of those classic Disney films of decades past. After all, where would animation be without those early efforts of Walt Disney?

The film to reintroduce the time-consuming but admittedly warmer form of animation is The Princess and the Frog, from old hands Ron Clements and John Musker (Aladdin and The Little Mermaid). The film is set in New Orleans and who better to give a movie like this the appropriate soundtrack than native bayou boy Randy Newman, who of course has a long history with movie scores and a great working relationship with Disney and Pixar.
The first full theatrical trailer for the film, and as you'll soon see, it's like Disney hasn't missed a beat since its hand-drawn heyday. This looks gorgeous.

I don't know how much life there is in a full-time return to this style of animation, but every now and a again I'd be all in favor of something like this. The Princess and the Frog opens on December 11th, which means I know where you'll be that weekend if you're a parent.

I am so very excited about this film coming out! It's awesome to see Disney return to it's return, and finally come out with a princess that ALL little girls can identify with. While to me Tiana is not the first Black or "ethnic" Princess (to me, it will always be Kida from "Atlantis: The Lost Empire"), she is the first Black AMERICAN, and I fully support what she would mean to so many who needs a positive influence in these troubled times. Thanks for this article, really. ^_^
