Sunday, January 10, 2010 at 12:21AM Remake Alert: 'Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance'
The Oldboy remake or reboot or whatever it was didn't stick, so Hollywood's next move is to remake Park Chan-Wook's
Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, another third of the Vengeance trilogy, along with Lady Vengeance, which so far has no new
fingerprints on it.

The troubling thing to me is not that they're remaking it - and the same went for Oldboy, too - so much as it is the pieces that are in
place. For Oldboy, the idea was to go back to the original manga and have Steven Spielberg direct Will Smith. I'd like to see a Smith-
Spielberg movie, but that's not it. Anyway, Oldboy won't be happening, and according to Screen Daily, Sympathy will fall on the
shoulders of rookie writer Brian Tucker. He may be great, but nobody knows.
Still, you'd like to see the source material generate something other than what seems to bee an off-handed assignment. Why wouldn't Warner Bros.
take this to a Brian Helgeland or a William Monahan? We're still very early in the life of this remake, so maybe Tucker writes a draft, the studio
digs where it's headed, and brings in some big guns to really make it go places. Because, if you've seen the film, you know it can.
On a related note, Wook's entire Vengeance trilogy will be repackaged and released on DVD (and maybe Blu-ray, but there's no confirmation of
that yet) on March 16th. That's Oldboy, Sympathy, and Lady Vengeance, all for the low, low price of $50. From DVD Active:

"Special features include an essay on each film by celebrated filmmakers, actors and writers, including Eli Roth...Additional features include - but are not limited to - audio commentary by Park Chan-Wook and actor Ryoo Seung-wan (Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance), behind-the-scenes, The Process of Mr. Vengeance, My Boksu Story, storyboards, photo gallery, filmographies, film notes, crew interviews, three audio commentaries (Oldboy), five behind-the-scenes featurettes, Le Grand Prix at Cannes, deleted scenes with commentary, regular and Fade-to-White versions (Lady Vengeance), character interviews (Lee Geum Ja, Prof. Baek, Prisoners, Families), Lady Vengeance at the 62nd Venice Film Festival, Trailer, Film Notes, Making of and deleted scenes."So at least that's good news.
