Paramount wants to feel the sensation of a moderate opening weekend blowing through its hair, plowing forward with a G.I. Joe sequel. Last year's movie made $54 million in three days, and $96 million more in 88 days. That's uninspiring. Oh, but what about the international dollars? Even with those, Joe didn't double its budget, not by a longshot, and then Paramount rushed the DVD release before people forgot about the movie completely. It only sold about four million copies. All told, this was not a big success. The merchandising helped, but that's the tail wagging the dog, isn't it?

Paramount is undaunted, however, so round two is coming, and the studio has sought out the hot writing duo of Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick from Zombieland to handle the script. That's not a done deal yet, but Reese and Wernick are also writing the sequel Deadpool spin-off to another disappointing summer 2009 entry, Wolverine, so they'll be busy guys for a while.
What is not known is whether or not Stephen Sommers will return to direct. Within days of the film's release in August, Paramount had already said it would make the sequel and Sommers was gloating about the film's success, calling into question the need for movie critics (who, by the way, weren't invited to see his very bad movie, anyway).
Thumbing through an old phone book, Paramount can find a better director than Stephen Sommers without much trouble. His stuff is never that good and usually quite repetitive.
The cast is all expected to be back, and with Reese and Wernick on board (if that comes to pass), it certainly has the potential to be a more sardonic film than the leaden franchise starter we watched in August.

The movie was so bad. I know this there were way dumber things, but did anyone wonder why the ice sank when it was cracked at the end of the movie?
They are writing Deadpool not Wolverine sequel.
i loved gi joe, sorry i did. The biggest problem in my opinion was casting. Chaning Tatum is understandable but i didnt like him. Also Rachel Nichols god i hope they replace her she was horrible actingwise and also shes ugly. Can we at least cast a real redhead?
WHAT DO YOU MEAN RACHEL NICHOLS IS UGLY??!?!
Sorry, I'm ok now.
I'd watch it. What I liked about the first film (yes, I liked it)- it was cheesy and ridiculous and stupid, but it never took itself seriously like "Transformers 2" did. When you think about it, the first film was basically "Team America" except it wasn't a parody of anything. If the writers come up with a tongue-in-cheek, self-parodic take on the "GI Joe" lore, that'd be an interesting watch.
CB, I know you only reported on this at all so you could post another pic of Sienna Miller right? ;)
Watched from the stand point of seeing explosions and hot red-heads Joe was fine.
That ice must have had some structural steel in it or something. hehe
Any excuse is a good one, NIronwolf. It's a shame she's not in Robin Hood.
This is a very exiting compare to any Movie. This is a completly Science friction movie and i hope the director Mr.Stephens launches its 2nd part because I loved very much this Movie and Actress Nichols.
