Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at 6:14AM Pierre Morel To Be "Respectful" Of Herbert's 'Dune'
Director Pierre Morel (Taken) has a new movie in theaters next month. But most people aren't as interested in From Paris with Love as they are his remake of Dune. He was recently announced as the man to lead the new version of the sci-fi classic, and Morel tells MTV you shouldn't expect anything like David Lynch's interpretation from the 1980s.

“As a David Lynch movie, I loved it,” Morel quipped. “As a Dune fan, I was not such a big fan.” And that about sums it up, I think. Been a long time since I've seen Dune, but I remember it being a bit odd. Morel is not as strange a director as Lynch, of course, but he's not really the first guy you'd think of, either.
However, Morel puts his money where his mouth is when it comes to Dune, so his knowledge of the material might give him an edge we wouldn't see just from watching the more simplistic Taken.
“I’ve been reading it over and over again – well, I’m 45 now, so for 30 years. The fun story, actually, is that there were six books in that first
series that Frank Herbert wrote. Every time I was going to buy a new one – because I couldn’t buy all six at one time – I was reading the previous
ones so I would not forget anything. So, by the time I bought the sixth book I had already read the first one six times! So, I’m a hardcore fan.”
Morel adds that he's focusing solely on the first book, that he's "trying to be very respectful to the original novel.” However, the director makes it clear that a movie has to be prepared for people with no knowledge of the book, which is (or should be) true of any adaptation. But he was fairly convincing when meeting with the producers, obviously, because Morel kind of came out of nowhere to grab this one, so even though this is one of the trickiest stories to get exactly right, we'll give him a little leeway for the time being.

It is funny that Lynch's version got the technology (except for the "wierding modules", WTF??)and look spot on, (except of course that Kyle McLaughlin looked NOTHING like Paul Atriedes from the book) but took the story and characters too "wierd", and then of course just cut off the ending.
The Sci-Fi channel did a slightly better job with the story, but their costumes, tech and sets looked nothing like what I envisioned (and I have read Dune more times than I can count!).
Maybe, (sorry for the cliche) the third time's the charm!
