Monday, January 18, 2010 at 3:22PM Johnny Depp's Pancho Villa Movie Shoots Next Year
Johnny Depp is, in fact, playing Pancho Villa in a new film written and directed by Serbian Palme d'Or winner Emir Kusturica. Back in early December, the idea was hatched that Depp was looking at the project, which would require him to portray the revolutionary leader in Spanish, and would require us to remember the title Seven Friends of Pancho Villa and the Woman with Six Fingers. The title is now Wild Roses, Tender Roses, which isn't nearly as cool, although the latest update from Screen Daily confirms that the movie will be in Spanish.

Of the film, described as being in a vein similar to Sergio Leone's Man with No Name trilogy, Kusturica said, "This is going to be my biggest movie. I will be doing it without compromise."
Speaking of compromise, I love that Depp is still doing strange little movies now and then. They used to dominate his filmography until Pirates and he's managed to keep doing indie flicks, although not as often as he does major studio fare. Hard to blame him for going on that ride, though, and it's not like Captain Jack Sparrow is a role he shouldn't play. We don't need four of them, but he sure did kick its ass the first time, didn't he?
How did Kusturica get Depp's attention for this movie? They shot Arizona Dream - one of those little movies that used to be Depp's speciality - back in 1993. The plan is for Wild Roses, Tender Roses to go into production in 2011, so let's go to the big board and see where and when Depp can fit this into his schedule. The Tourist and Pirates 4 are supposed to be this year, then there's Dark Shadows, which was last revised to shoot this fall.
Don't forget about Shantaram, which Depp was going to do back before the writers' strike a couple years ago. He'd still like to fit that in, especially since he's producing. Terry Gilliam still wants him for The Man Who Killed Don Quixote. Oh, and The Lone Ranger, which would be in production next year, too.
That's not a lot of free time to become fluent or at least extremely conversant in Spanish.

Hey he can always buy Rosetta Stone....I hear from close friends its amazingly good & I'm thinking about getting it to brush up on my French....
But knowing actors & if I was in his position (as in wealth) I'd go live in that country for some time & learn the language 1st hand, which is always the best way to go....
This sounds real AWESOME I cant wait to see it when it comes out. They should really name it Pancho Villa though, I think it sounds better and will draw more attention.
