Rumor Patrol: Tobey Maguire Still Not Bilbo Baggins

More rumors have been ciculating that Tobey Maguire is back in Guillermo del Toro's plans for The Hobbit. The Sun, a British tabloid that has traded in some pretty outlandish stories over the past few years, says that with his time as Spider-Man suddenly behind him, the seas have parted for Maguire to play Bilbo Baggins.

Here's the problem: del Toro himself has just shot the rumor down. Over at The One Ring, where the director is a registered member and frequent visitor, GdT commented on the latest round of idle talk, writing simply, "Not true."

Of course, Guillermo doesn't add any other information, but we'll take him at his word(s). Curiously, AMC's John Campea also says he's heard - and from a source close to del Toro - that Maguire is all but cast in the film. Still...I'll go with del Toro.

There is still a bit of secrecy about all of this, as you might expect, and despite the loose lips of Sir Ian McKellen. The casting of Bilbo Baggins is probably the biggest obstacle yet to overcome. But all the rumors - Maguire, James McAvoy, and David Tennant among them - have all dried up, as have del Toro's own plans, announced several times, to reveal the identity of the actor playing Bilbo "soon" or "in several weeks." And they're about out of several weeks.

The film is confirmed as a December 2011 release, the production is supposed to take about 14 months, and they'll get started, at last check, in June, shooting both movies at once. Yeah, they've still got a few months to find Bilbo (if it's not one of the names above that the filmmakers just want to announce their own way), but shouldn't it be one of those things that doesn't take this long?

I'm not even sure why Toby is even being considered...IMO, he would not make a very good Bilbo.
