'Green Lantern' Director on Outer Space Scenes

There are high hopes over at Warner Bros. and DC Comics - collectively DC Entertainment these days - for Green Lantern. While I am still surprised by the greenlit budget of over $150 million for a start-up comic book franchise, especially for a character who is not on a first name basis with the majority of moviegoers, there's been an awfully strong commitment to it so far: Ryan Reynolds will star and Casino Royale director Martin Campbell is the man in charge. One reason for the big budget is that there's plenty of outer space to juggle in Green Lantern. On its own, that's fine, but in a superhero movie, you have to wonder if audiences will really go for it. If you know the story of the character, you know he's a galactic cop, more or less, so he can't not enter outer space, but that's probably the biggest hurdle the movie faces. Campbell tells MTV he can't really put a number on how much of the film is on terra firma and how much is somewhere out there. "I don't know what the percentage is, but there's quite a bit in space," acknowledged the director. "The initial trip up there, the training sessions he has to go through in order to become a Green Lantern. Then, of course at the end, he goes back up to Oa again." So...a lot, then? "There are a couple of bits [on Earth] in between [the space scenes]," Campbell said. "I think there will be enough [of a balance] to satisfy everybody." So clearly, the powers that be recognize how delicate this situation is, and how getting it right, particularly since this is the first impression, is absolutely crucial. I'm not worried about you if you've got a history with the character, but if you're just interested because Blake Lively will probably look like great in a jumpsuit, then Campbell's efforts at balance are just for you.
