Tuesday, January 26, 2010 at 10:19PM Oh No: A 'Weekend at Bernie's' Remake
The punchline has become a punchline again. There are few more universally recognized pillars of shame than Weekend at Bernie's, one you can throw in at any time and everyone knows you're making a joke. "Oh, Shawshank is good," you'd say, "but it's no Weekend at Bernie's." Everyone knows you're being sarcastic just by mentioning the name.

And now, it appears we'll have a whole new wave of jokes. And Jonathan Silverman could be back on top of the world, which is nice. Moviehole writes that Gladden Entertainment, which made the original Bernie's flicks and recently announced a new version of Mannequin, officially has no dignity.
It's not the first time Bernie's has been the subject of remake rumors, but we never thought it was serious. While Moviehole does say the project is in development, that doesn't immediately mean it will be in 3,000 theaters one day soon. It could go direct to video, it could never fully materialize, or it could wind up on the big screen. I think the second option is the one we all want, but it wouldn't be the first time we didn't all get what we wanted.
I would hope that our national sense of humor has progressed past the point of carting a corpse around. It sure was well beyond that lifeless concept (pardon the pun) back in 1993, when the sequel was released to mostly empty theaters. Could we have possibly regressed that much?
There's no way this attracts any real talent, and only a slightly larger chance that it attracts an audience. At least I hope so.

Oh god why?!?!?!?!?
I think one of the reasons this has obtained legendary status as an example of an immediately recognized joke is because of the horrific, unnecessary sequel.
Aren't the "original" cast members practically corpses for real now, or is that just wishful thinking?
My kids laughed their butts off at 1 and 2. If #3 came out we would surely check that out. Getting the original cast members would be crucial through.
