'Crank 3' Might Happen, Might Be in 3-D

I say this as...well, not a fan, exactly, but probably as a charitable critic who didn't expect a whole lot out of the first movie and less from the second: I really don't think we need a third Crank movie. There's just no reason. The films have combined to make about $75 million, which is profitable but not convincing. Plus, the sequel only drew $13 million in the US. Translation: Nobody seems to care.

That won't stop Neveldine and Taylor, the filmmaking duo behind these films and Gamer (which also failed to set the world on fire). The Film Stage talked to Brian Taylor and he confirmed that Lionsgate is still keen on more Chev Chelios adventures. "They've approached us for it," Taylor confirmed, "but we wanna make another movie or two before that."
To change things up, Crank 3 might, somewhat predictably, be in 3-D. And if there's any reason at all to continue with this franchise, this is it. The visuals are already really cool, and while 3-D couldn't have completely covered up the wide story gaps in Crank: High Voltage, it would at least raise the game a bit. It's like Ashlee Simpson's nose job: Sure, she's still got way too many problems, but at least she looks better than she did before.
But the third movie isn't automatic yet, 3-D or not. There is a story, according to Taylor, but it won't happen until "the money is there, when everyone wants to do it, and when Jason [Statham] has got a hole in his schedule."
Of course, if these guys want to make at least one movie first, it better be more successful than everything else they've put out or that bit about lining up the money might be tougher than it seems. Frankly, I think the best bet for the franchise is to just turn it into a video game. It already plays by those rules and you can go all over the place in that environment.

Yeah this is what we need, to water down the coolness of 3-D. Someone get on the horn and let's get those Mannequin and Weekend at Bernie's remakes in 3-D ASAP. Can't wait for Judd Apatow to get a hold of the magic of 3-D so he can swing some dudes junk in our face.
Craig, I will totally pay to see a Judd Apatow movie with 3D man-junk in it, even though I'm starting to loathe the format. It sounds like the only thing that 3D movies haven't done yet- full frontal male nudity.
I'd probably watch a Crank 3, though it belongs on DVD and it should stay the hell away from the 3D format (although this movie could do something with that- the "Crank" series has always been about being a live-action video game/thrill ride, and the visuals could at least make for an entertaining watch). Then again, I'm a sucker for dumb action movies & their sequels.
Now if you excuse me, my Blu-Ray copy of "The Marine 2" just came in the mail...
Well, I'm a film snob but I quite enjoy watching the Stath in Crank. It's so deliberately dumb that it actually becomes rather clever and good.
Reminds me of Face/Off, actually.
