Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at 5:43PM James Cameron Already Working on 'Avatar 2'?
Avatar has officially dethroned Titanic as the world's top box office draw. Even if it slides from this point, making the kind of money a normal movie would make on the heels of a $35 million weekend, Avatar would have about another $70 million in its pocket in the US, more than enough to beat Titanic's $600 million here at home, and you could at least double that amount overseas. So, that's a $2 billion movie. But, of course, it isn't making money the way anything else ever has, so expect a good deal more out of it, maybe close to $2.3 - $2.4 billion.

Obviously, that means talk of a sequel. James Cameron hasn't quashed such discussion, going so far as saying there are other moons in that same planetary system as Pandora that he could explore. He might even fool around with the idea of a trilogy. However, he doesn't have the story hammered out yet, there's no script as such, and I wonder if he'd continue directing them, as draining as that process must be.
Slashfilm cites a source that says some elements of pre-production have already begun on an Avatar 2, which almost certainly wouldn't have such an unimaginative name. "According to the source," writes Peter Sciretta, "some behind the scenes technical crew have signed on for three to five year contracts, just in case it runs long."
From the studio's perspective, the gamble Fox made has clearly paid off. 20th has made plenty of cash off this thing, although I wonder what the final split will be between investors, the studio, and Cameron, who agreed to be paid last to make the $400 - $500 million movie more attractive to third parties. Fox would be stupid not to want sequels, but the executives would be even more stupid if they tried to push Cameron into making this his next film.
The King of the World does have other stuff in the works - I think his Hiroshima project sounds very promising - so he may opt to do that first to recharge the batteries. Plus, I think we can safely say there would be demand for another Avatar movie in five years, even if it takes that long.

As long as he doesn't disappear for another 10 years... I enjoy his work too much.

It does not follow that because we do not subsidize smoking, we should not regulate unhealthy activities. Costs and savings are not the only variable. The fact that obesity creates costs is merely an additional reason to regulate it, not the only one. The main reason is its danger to an individual. pbknhp pbknhp - Belstaff Jacket UK.
