Movie Review - 'Séraphine'

Séraphine Starring Yolande Moreau and Ulrich Tukur Directed by Martin Provost Rated PG

An astounding true story that only occasionally gets too caught up in its own telling, Séraphine is closer to the way a movie biography can be than we normally get from American studios. Its sentimentality is mostly in the right place, it puts the ugly on equal footing with the beautiful, and the film isn't afraid of delving deeper into why this journey is one worth taking, rather than just presenting a timeline of key events. So why in the world haven't more people heard about the real story behind the film before? In art circles, Séraphine Louis (Yolande Moreau) is a well-known practitioner of the naïve style, which is mostly what it sounds like. In addition to lacking the kind of sophistication of the masters, many of the artists in that school have no formal training. So it was with Séraphine, who was nearly 50 when her massive collection of work was first discovered by art dealer William Uhde (Ulrich Tukur) in northern France. At the time - 1912 - Séraphine was working as a housecleaner, the sort of job she had always done. But Uhde recognized something immediately in her painting that began a long professional relationship interrupted by a world war and, later, the serious complications of a lifetime of mental illness. Nevertheless, Séraphine became famous in the late 1920s, as she was approaching her mid-60s. The Great Depression left the artist without many patrons, and before she could see light at the end of that tunnel, Séraphine was committed to an institution, where she lived out the final decade of her life, unable to create more art and possibly unfit to do so, anyway. Director and co-writer Martin Provost handles the subject matter delicately, never letting the sensationalistic angles of this story become the true focus. But it is a little softer than it needs to be, really the only chip in the veneer. Otherwise, Provost spends our time appropriately, adding detail to the summary of this artist's biography and eliciting a wonderful, showstopping performance by Yolande Moreau, recipient of about half a dozen international film nominations and awards for this role, including a recent Best Actress win from the National Society of Film Critics. Where Provost puts his own stamp on the film is in the choices he makes with cinematographer Laurent Brunet. Like The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, this is an uncomfortable biography that could command attention simply by unfolding on the screen. But the photography is anything but static, making Séraphine a film on its own merits. And there are many.
