Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at 4:10AM Poll: What Will Be the Biggest Movie of 2010?
We just went through the biggest
year in Hollywood history - $10 billion, the most attendance ever, and other impressive statistics. I think 2011 will
break that mark (just look at the summer that's already been lined up), but what about this year, now that it is this year?

I've picked 15 movies for our latest poll that look like pretty substantial hits. Some we don't have to think really hard about (Iron Man 2 and Harry Potter), but
can Clash of the Titans pull of a 300-like pre-summer surprise, and can Christopher Nolan's Inception come anywhere near The Dark Knight?
If I had to guess, I'd take Potter or Iron Man, but this is the year for the last Shrek, Toy Story 3-D, and TRON,
which will really, really try to capitalize on the momentum created by Avatar. So there's enough competition out ther for a pretty interesting
box office race. And if you think we've missed one - if you firmly believe Green Hornet will be a world beater - leave that in the comments
section below.

There is a trailer I just viewed on the apple website for a movie called Fading Of The Cries. I have not heard of this before but something about it looks very intense and interesting. I'm very curious about it and am anticipating seeing based on what I've just seen. It could either be the hit of 2010 or utter crap. Something just feels right about it. I had the opposite inclination towards Terminator Salvation, thinking it would bomb. It turned out to not be very appealing. The other movie I'm looking forward to would be Tron, after the recent release of Avatar. I don't know if 2010 can beat this past year according to your article. But the above are my top two interests thus far.
2010 is shaping up to be a blockbuster year for sure. My thoughts on the list: My inner geek wants to see TRON in the worst way. It should not disapoint, though there is always that chance with virtually any remake. However, the devil on my shoulder wants to see Kick-Ass, perhaps a double feature with Clash of The Titans to follow. Right now, the little hellion has my inner geek in a wedgie of the 9th level persuasion.
But these are my personal tastes; as to what will win the box office crown for 2010, I'd put even money on either Iron Man 2 or Harry Potter, though I can see Tron and Toy Story 3 battling it out as well.
Alice looks fantastic, but it's not going to come close to pulling in Potter-like dough. Its just too...creepy looking. COTT, as previously stated, gives me a semi every time I watch the trailer. The Kraken looks utterly terrifying. Ditto for Inception (minus the Kraken), and actually, it is probably one of the best and worst trailers for 2010 movies that I have seen. Prince of Persia looks forgettable, as does Robin Hood. I was pumped like Hanz and Franz to see Robin Hood, but it really looks like Gladiator in a forest and, for lack of a better cliche, been there, done that.
Of course, I'll be dragged by my wife to see Toy Story, though I will admit that I won't put up much of a fight. Not because she has spent several years on a diabolical plan to crush my will-power, and has succeeded, but because I actually like Toy Story. I just wouldn't see it on my own.
I think Iron Man will take the crown. Harry Potter will probably come in 2nd with Shrek in 3rd and maybe Toy Story in 4th. My 5th is not even on your list -- Salt -- I've heard good things about it and I think it will be grittier and more dramatic than the trailer lets on.
I was more excited about Robin Hood and Prince of Persia before I saw their trailers. Alice and Inception both look too dark. Eclipse will have the die-hard fans pumping up the opening figures, but like Twilight, I expect it will fade quickly. Word on Shuter Island has not been good and I don't expect that to do well. Ditto Clash of the Titans. Kick Ass may be the surprise hit of the year. Word has been good but its hard to gauge how broad its appeal would be.
Iron man 2will do strong but the last (first part of, I know) movie for Harry Potter just makes more sense. It's audience is to wide, kids to adults will see it. My mother (along with plenty of others) will probably go see it just because it is the end of a long series.
Have you people not seen Pixar's track record? Toy Story 3(3D or otherwise) will win the summer hands down. They have been raking in the dough and basking in strong critical success with nothing but new, original stories. And now a second sequel to the one that started it all. No contest.
Potter will make it's money for sure, but it is kind of running out of steam if you ask me, and it's not even the last movie yet. Shrek 2 was a juggernaut, but 3... not so much. Iron Man 2 will dominate early because of huge crossover appeal, but I still think Pixar will win.
Oh, and Colin: Not that I blame you, but did you forget about The Last Airbender? (Otherwise know as "no, not THAT Avatar movie...")
Iron Man be tops domestically but Harry Potter will the win the worldwide contest.
Toy Story has a huge shot, true. One of the major hurdles they had to overcome was that a lot of younger kids had never seen the original movie; they never witness the magic of arguably one of the most important animated films of all time! However, through pure genius (okay, almost anybody worth their salt could have figure it out), they re-released Toy Story 1 and 2 in IMAX 3-D and of course released special edition DVD's to build excitement. Domestically, it probably has the most widespread appeal, however internationally, Harry Potter or Iron Man will probably best it.
Just a heads up to everyone. Iron Man 2 is almost a guarantee to do over $320 million. Thats what the first one did and the first sequel of blockbusters always do better. Personally i have Iron man doing $400 million but thats me. The question however is do you guys think anything else is a guarantee to do better than $320 million. Potter will do $300 million because the series is gaining audience but it won't go to far past it . Mr Pigg if you look at Pixars track record only one movie has ever gone over $300 million and it didn't even win the year and none of the Toy Storys even reached $250 million so that is out. inception looks good but it lacking one major thing the dark knight had. Umm how about Heath Ledger and his untimely death that created an unbelievable amount of buzz. It will do good but winning the year...come on. Shrek is a guaranteed $300 million just because all of the other ones have done it so that has the best shot at beating Iron Man 2. Also good point Sid, Salt should atleast be on the list. It could be another surprise hit like Wanted
