Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at 11:43PM James Cameron Talks 'Avatar 2 & 3,' 'Cleopatra,' and More
That's right, James Cameron is going Lord of the Rings on us. He plans on filming Avatar 2 and 3 simultaneously, and release them a year apart. While that's good news for Avatar fans, there's no word on when he plans to begin production. And I have to say, I'm impressed. Nearly a year after release and the movie is still releasing footage and even more DVD releases. In case you missed it, our own Olivia Briggs reported recently on a deleted scene that was definitely best left deleted. But my point still stands.

With Cleopatra rumors circulating around the web, and the upcomming DVD release of Avatar's Extended Collector's Edition, Mr. Cameron seems to have decided to add to the press by making a few statements.
The first one concerns the progress of the Avatar trilogy. James Cameron has stated that it's in progress, but he seems to imply it's still being written and designed. Knowing his previous work, he's likely waiting until it's just right before he starts filming, so I can't even guess as to when this will start. As long as he doesn't have to make any new technology, I can't imagine it being more than a couple years.
The second statement was about the rumors concerning him directing Cleopatra with Angelina Jolie. He says he hasn't made any decision on that, which gives some weight to the rumors. What he does commit to is that Avatar 2 and 3 will be filmed together, so it will likely depend on how long those are in pre-production, to determine if he has time to work on Cleopatra. Again, since James can basically make his own timeline, I don't even dare to assume which choice he'll make.
His third statement has me a bit leery. I'll post it verbatum, as it concerns Sigourney Weaver's character, Grace. If you're one off the twelve people that haven't seen it, stop reading, as there's some spoilers.
"Who said she died? Nobody dies in a science-fiction movie. Whether Grace lives or dies depends probably more on Sigourney's agent than anything."
This one kind of irks me. Her death meant something in Avatar, since moving from her human body to her alien avatar failed. It gave it more weight when Jake Sully was able to move into his avatar. And while Cameron would make it very believable as to how she stayed alive, bringing her back in any way almost seems to cheapen this world he created. It won't stop me from seeing it, it'll just annoy me for awhile.
