Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at 8:06PM New Trailer For 'The Rite:' Demons, Darkness, and Everything We've Already Seen Before
A trailer for the new Anthony Hopkins-led exorcism film The Rite has surfaced, and it does little to distinguish itself from...well...every other non Anthony Hopkins-led film about exorcism. Apparently "inspired by true events," like every movie about demons that's ever come out was, The Rite focuses on an American seminary student, Michael Kovak (Colin O'Donoghue), who travels to Vatican City for...exorcism school (if that's a real thing, I'm amazed.) Once there, he meets Father Lucas (Hopkins) who shows him an ultra-dark version of Vatican traditions.
Oh, Dr. Lecter, just stop trying to scare us.
Honestly, the trailer does little to convince me that this is any more worth seeing than any of the other demon-destroying films that have passed through theaters in the past few years (The Last Exorcism, The Order, etc.), but I would so love to be wrong.
Hopkins is a legendary actor, but he's one who's frankly been making some really strange choices in his last few films (Wolfman, anyone?) So it's an exercise in a continuing disappointment to see him in this vehicle, and this trailer doesn't even tell us what the film's about. Aside from the usual girl-gets-possessed-young-priest-won't-believe-in-demons muck, the movie looks no more interesting than an episode of "Supernatural," and even that's giving it too much credit.
But who knows, maybe Hopkins will prove to be the component that saves this film from being lumped in with all the others who failed to rise to the standards that The Exorcist set almost forty years ago. Director Mikael Håfström's past credits include 1408 and Derailed, neither of which was particularly compelling, so it's hard to expect much. But, then again, we can always hope and pray that maybe this time, the Demon of Awfulness in most films about demons will finally be expelled.
Keep the faith, and watch the trailer below:

I thought 1408 was excellent, but that may be because I'm a sucker for John Cusack. And yeah, that Vatican exorcism school is real, it was also referenced in The Last Exorcism.
