Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at 11:58PM Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' to Become a Feature Film?
The King of Pop still lives on in the hearts of many, including 'This Is It' director Kenny Ortega, who is currently shopping the idea of a full-length feature film around involving the late Michael Jackson, according to Deadline New York. Ortega's plan is to make a film inspired by the popular song 'Thriller' , though it's still unknown whether it will be based directly off of the classic music video.

It is reported that Ortega will direct, while writer Jeremy Garelick will pen the script. Garelick is probably best known for writing the script of 'The Break Up' , which was a movie I enjoyed, yet I've never met anyone else who felt the same.
The plot for the movie is believed to be related "to the song's folklore, involving Vincent Price and the town he grew up in." The original music video was directed by John Landis and was 14 minutes in duration, which is very long compared to today's music video standards. 'Thriller' is referred to by many people, including myself as the greatest music video ever. If you don't remember the video, it's worth looking up on Youtube, especially if you like zombies and pop stars who can transform into werewolves.
Several studios are already in a bidding war over rights for the project, including Fox 2000 and Lionsgate. The timing for a horror/comdedy type of musical involving dancing zombies seems ideal to me. Maybe a 'Zombie Land' meets 'Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street' style of movie is what they're going for, but that's pure speculation on my part. My only hope is that they choose to include the song 'Thriller' and more of Jackson's early work in the movie.
Would you want to go see a musical like 'Thriller'?

It would probably be best they just admit they're INSPIRED by the original video, but it's not directly an extended adaptaion of it. The original video had homages to "I Was A Teenage Werewolf" as well as zombie movies, but they were very trite references - even then. So if they were to expand on exactly what THAT video did, they would be spreading things VERY thin over the course of a couple of hours. If they want to make a musical send-up of everything from the Universal Horror films through - gosh, maybe even all the way up to "torture porn", using bubble-gum greats like "Purple People Eater", "Monster Mash" as well as later era hits like "Thriller", that might be interesting to see if they could pull it off.
