Monday, October 4, 2010 at 11:01PM Full-length Trailer for Coen Brother's 'True Grit'
However, some of you out there may need a bit more convincing. Even after seeing what they did with No Country For Old Men, you may still find yourself wondering if seeing The Dude do some very un-Dude-like killing is your cup of tea.
If you have been on the fence about the Coen's remake of the 1969 John Wayne film (which was based on a novel by Charles Portis) about one-eyed U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn's quest to track down the murderer of a young girl's father, the first full-length trailer has hit the Internet. While it doesn't give too much away, it certainly gives an idea of the overall look and feel of the film.
I think that the trailer does a lot of things right. It definitely does a great job painting Jeff Bridges as a bad ass and Josh Brolin as an instantly unlikeable villain. It gives a solid first glimpse of unknown actress Hailee Steinfeld as Mattie Ross, a role that will be much meatier in this version of the story. The trailer also gets bonus points for using Johnny Cash's "God's Gonna Cut You Down" incredibly effectively and for that odd quick cut at the end that made me think a bear was riding a horse the first time I watched it.
The only real concern I have after seeing the trailer is that Bridges seems to be adopting Biggie Smalls patented "mouth full of coleslaw" speech pattern, which could get incredibly grating quickly and could make it difficult to understand his lines. Then again, as tough as it was to understand Biggie most of the time, sometimes his words just hypnotized me, so perhaps it could work for Bridges.

It's nice to see that Conan O'Brien's Masturbating Bear has found meaningful employment during the long break between The Tonight Show and that new gig over at TBS...
cripes i can't wait for christmas!!
"Then again, as tough as it was to understand Biggie most of the time, sometimes his words just hypnotized me, so perhaps it could work for Bridges." Classic lmao! Oh and this movie looks awesome! The trailer kinda had the same feel as the Public Enemies trailer a couple years ago
I. Can't. Wait. I loved the book when it came out, and, although John Wayne was great in the role, he really wasn't as dark as Rooster was in said book. Plus, they left out some major plot points.... As I said, I. Can't. Wait.
I was unaware just how much of a Western fan I was until I saw Eastwood's Unforgiven and Kurt Russell's "ghost-directed" Tombstone.
The Coen Bros really caught my eye with Barton Fink and then Brother Where Are Thou?. Back then I wondered if they'd ever turn their cool hands to some good gun-slinging gunho direction.
So, when I saw McCarthy's spectular book No Country For Old Men had been given the Coen treatment I was over the moon! I wasn't disappointed either. It haunts like no horror movie can . . . it creeps under your skin and keeps popping into your head like an exquisite bad dream. A modern-day Western in the truest sense.
THEN . . . I heard word on the grapevine of True Grit -- Coen Styley! Wow, over the moon and into next galaxy for me. This is all too much for me and I can't wait for December. These brothers-gennii have given me the best Christmas present ever. The cherries on top have to be Bridges, Brolin, Damon and Pepper. Bowl me over with a tumbleweed!
