'Unstoppable' Review

Unstoppable Starring Denzel Washington, Chris Pine, and Rosario Dawson Directed by Tony Scott Rated PG-13

Frank Barnes (Denzel Washington) has worked on the railroads for 28 years. You could say it's all he knows, but he knows it well. He may not understand the physics, but he knows how the trains move, how they behave, and what to do to keep things safe out on the tracks. However, he had recently lost his wife after a battle with cancer, and the relationship with his two daughters has been suffering since.

Will Colson (Chris Pine) is fresh out of training, and on his first day as a conductor. Older engineers look at him as a threat from the union, yellow vest and all. But Will is dealing with problems of his own, being separated from his wife and unable to see his child, along with the pending court battles involved with it.

Director Tony Scott has given us very real people in Unstoppable. You can connect and relate to both Frank and Will, and they may even remind you of someone you know. The dialogue is natural, and the scenes when Denzel Washington and Chris Pine are able to get a good back and forth going are very entertaining.

The film wastes no time in cutting to the premise. An engineer, played by Ethan Suplee, skips a few procedures to get his boss off his back. Again, a character people can relate to, because we all have known that guy at work that takes shortcuts on his work. The end result is the true villain of Unstoppable, a runaway train going at 70+ mph with 10 million tons of weight behind it.

I don't know about you, but I always viewed trains as an annoyance, blocking intersections in cities. Now I view them with a quiet respect, understanding the true weight of what railroad workers have to control.

Tony Scott does a great job at building tension, starting with a train slowly moving away from it's engineers to a potential hazardous material spill in a major city. Along the way, we see the increasing damage potential this train can cause, as it blasts through attempts to stop it.

This is where Tony Scott makes great use of Rosario Dawson. Rosario plays Connie Hooper, who serves as the eyes and ears for Frank and Will, as well as the go-between involving the corporate bigwigs. And while she serves in a management role, she's smart enough to listen to her people on the tracks, and do whatever is needed to stop this train before it can harm any more people.

This isn't a movie about superheroes. This is a movie about everyday, ordinary people, dealing with their ordinary problems, expecting an ordinary day on the job. And these people, people you and I know, are thrust into an extraordinary situation, with the means and opportunity to do something about it. These people weren't born heroes, but instead rise to the occasion when it's needed.
