So what's the worst thing you can do to a disgraced actor who is hated by everyone in Hollywood? Simple, have him make a cameo appearance in a highly anticipated film and then take it away from him by claiming that his actions have made the cast and crew uneasy working with him. Or so you would think.
Dammit, I'm Mel Gibson, I can tell Jesus Christ what to do!
Turns out, when Mel Gibson lost out on his cameo appearance for Hangover 2, he actually won $750,000. You see, he had a "pay or play" deal which means he collects his fees regardless of his inclusion in the film. Now, there are good actors who don't make $750,000 for a lead role in an entire film. I guess acting like a jacka$$ is another way to gain fame and fortune.
Hate him or love him, you can't stop him. Odds are he'll be back on top in two years.

Eh, I think it's just overplayed. I'm betting we'll see him in some capacity in The Hangover 2.
"Now, there are good actors who don't make $750,000 for a lead role in an entire film." Are you saying, that Mel Gibson ain't a good actor?
No, he's obviously one of the best and if he were to star in something, his rate is probably $5 - $10 million. I'm just saying there are plenty of capable actors out there who won't even make that much for a film.
wow 750 K were the producers overzealous? I mean he has been in deep trouble for a better part of the year. I hope it was a good gag.
