Tuesday, November 16, 2010 at 12:03AM Carey Mulligan to Play Luhrmann's Daisy
No, this isn't a fictional Martin Scorsese/Vincent Chase project from "Entourage." Director Baz Luhrmann is going to do his own take on the classic F. Scott Fitzgerald novel The Great Gatsby. I'm assuming it'll be quite a bit unlike any previous versions we've seen, such as the 1974 version that starred Robert Redford and Mia Farrow, or the 2000 TV movie featuring Mira Sorvino. Today news comes via Deadline that Luhrmann has settled on his Daisy Buchanan, having officially given the role to the up-and-coming Carey Mulligan, and also giving us our first sneak peak at the actress in character for the role.

Mulligan, who first garnered a lot of attention in An Education and further proved her chops in Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, was one of several actresses being considered for the role. (Others included Rebecca Hall, Keira Knightley, Amanda Seyfried, Blake Lively, Scarlett Johansson, and Michelle Williams.) She'll play opposite Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby and Tobey Maguire in the role of Nick Carraway.
Despite the "official" status of this casting news, it sounds as if the film going into production isn't quite a sure thing yet. Luhrmann, who likes to workshop his scripts with several potential actors, had this to say:
There are a few elements that I feel need to be resolved before I would categorically state that this is my next film. Regarding the role of Daisy Buchanan, I was privileged to explore the character with some of the world's most talented actresses, each one bringing their own particular interpretation, all of which were legitimate and exciting. However, specific to this particular production of The Great Gatsby, I was thrilled to pick up the phone an hour ago to the young Oscar-nominated British actress Carey Mulligan and say to her: "Hello, Daisy Buchanan."
The picture below was taken by Luhrmann himself during Mulligan's reading/try-out with DiCaprio on November 2. (Presumably that's the back of Leo's head in the photo, though that wasn't mentioned/confirmed.)
I'm pretty excited about this project, and hope we see it come to fruition. I'm a pretty big fan of Luhrmann's unique style, even when it gets a bit wacky, and I think he could bring a pretty exciting and interesting take on the oft-retold story. Check out the preview picture of Mulligan as Daisy below and see if it has the same effect on you. (Click to see it giant-sized.)

i think she doesn't fit as daisy. she's too smart looking for the role. daisy is ditsy and shallow right? she doesn't look like one but she looks like she's a good villain. oh well, i won't be watching the movie anyway.
I'm a little curious to see if Mr. Luhrman, of whom I am a fan, can recover from Austrailia...
