DiCaprio will play H.H. Holmes, a man who murdered "somewhere between 27 and 200 people" around the time of the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, according to Variety. Larson's nonfiction book tells the stories of Holmes and Daniel H. Burnham, who was the architect of the fair. Holmes built a hotel near the fairgrounds, and lured single young women there.

This is sort of a different role for Leo, as he hasn't frequently been cast as a heel. He was sort of a bad guy in Catch Me if You Can, but a likeable one who served as the film's protagonist at that. This isn't his first turn in a period piece, of course—he starred in Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York, also set in the 19th century. Devil in the White City sounds like it'll be our first real chance to see DiCaprio as a bona fide villain, though. No word yet on who'll play Burnham, the World's Fair architect whose story intersects with Holmes.

DiCaprio is next slated to play J. Edgar Hoover in Clint Eastwood's Hoover, and presumably White City would be hist next role after that.
