Saturday, November 20, 2010 at 11:05PM Trailer for 'Brighton Rock' Remake Looks Inspired
The original Brighton Rock, made in 1947 and starring a young Richard Attenborough, is still considered one of the most successful British films noir to date. If it's somehow not familiar to you, it may be because the U.S. version was called Young Scarface. Or because you're not into british films noir.

Either way, it's based on the book, also called "Brighton Rock," by novelist Graham Greene, and it's being remade by the production team that also did Atonement and Eastern Promises, so expect some lush visual landscapes. It's also got a killer cast, featuring Helen Mirren, John Hurt, Andy Serkis, relative newcomer Andrea Riseborough, and Sam Riley, who's resemblance to Attenborough is almost scary.
The story centers on a criminal gang in Brighton, England, focussing on Pinkie (Riley), who gets a little more than he planned when he's supposed to hush up Rose (Riseborough), who's witnessed one of the gangs many wrongdoings. It might read as a typical wrong-side-of-the-tracks love story, or even a bit similar to this year'sThe Town, but I think the original story combined with the strength of the cast will make this one stand out. It's also written and directed by Rowan Joffe, who's also been behind the screenplays for The American, and 28 Weeks Later..., so he's got a background in heightened tension.
It's just uncanny.
Overall the trailer makes this one look exciting. In that quiet, English kind of way. It's also funny to note that the part of Rose originally went to Carey Mulligan, who dropped out for Wall Street 2. Whoops. If the early rumors about Riseborough's performance are true, Mulligan's error seems to have given her the role of a lifetime.
Brighton Rock comes out on February 4th in the UK, it's likely that a limited release in the US will follow shortly after. Check out the the trailer below.
