Bryan Singer Says No to Wolverine

While I think this was largely assumed, it's refreshing to hear it from Bryan Singer himself. To stop a rumor before it could spread too far, he made the statement that Wolverine will not be appearing in X-Men: First Class.

Now don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Wolverine. Hugh Jackman seems to be born to play the role, and while I wasn't impressed by X:Men Origins: Wolverine, I still love the character. But that's the problem, the character is so popular he practically took over the X-Men trilogy. This decision by Singer is a big one, and it will let us see if the X-Men brand can stand without Wolverine. I hope it does; Singer's X-Men: First Class gives us a younger Magneto and Professor Xavier, developing their friendship and showing it become something else entirely.

The rumor was started by a limo driver making a Facebook post, who said he had just driven Hugh Jackman from the filming location for X-Men: First Class in Georgia. Here's Bryan Singer's full response, which also tells more about his plans for the film:

"Hugh Jackman is not in the movie, he's in the Wolverine movies. X-Men hasn't started shooting in Georgia yet and if Hugh was in Georgia, it wasn't for this movie. It's about how Xavier - if you know the X-Men universe - how Professor Xavier and Magneto kind of met and became friends and how that friendship turned into something else. It takes place in the early 60s and it incorporates some characters I was able to bring back in time that are familiar, as well as some new characters, new mutants. Also, there's a new villain component, a really cool villain and villain group. It's a really cool and fun story. It will be the first Silver Age Marvel movie. We've set First Class in a time when the X-Men were conceived in the early 60s, up against political events that were happening - the early civil rights movement - and we have these kinds of events at a time when the world didn't know mutants existed."

Myself, Singer, or both? Because, when I first read this, I had to actually double check that it was Matthew Vaughn directing... almost sounds like Singer's calling the directing shots.
