Every fall in Santa Monica, independent filmmakers converge to the American Film Market (aka AFM) to showcase their films for major production companies with deep pockets. Deadline Hollywood reports that The Weinstein Company won a competitive bidding battle for the rights to Apollo 18, a fictional film about extraterrestrials by Timur Bekmambetov.

Bekmambetov is best known for his work on Wanted, and is currently set to direct Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Although the film is well under production, this means The Weinstein Company will fully finance the picture from here on out.
The storyline for the film is intriguing. It's based on the actual mission of Apollo 18 which was cancelled by NASA but myth has it that the mission actually happened. Although the plot hasn't been revealed, if you can put together the NASA space mission and aliens, you can pretty much guess how it's going to play out.
Apollo 18 is set to premier March 4th, 2011.
