Forbes List of 10 Most Overpaid Actors

Forbes has released their annual list of the "10 Most Overpaid Actors" in Hollywood and for a second year in a row, Will Ferrell finds himself in the number one spot.

To compile the list, Forbes estimates how much an actor earns on a film, then they analyze the film's gross to determine how much of a return studios get on their investment in a particular actor. They look at actors last three films, then divide the "operating income on those films ... by the star’s total compensation to come up with a return-on-investment number. The final number represents an average of how much a studio earns for every dollar paid."

Most of the names on the list aren't very surprising. Will Ferrell and Eddie Murphy claim the top two spots and names you'd expect like Tom Cruise, Vince Vaughn and Jim Carrey round out the list. (You can see the complete top 10 after the cut.)

Perhaps the most surprising name to surface on the list is Matt Damon, who is usually a pretty reliable moneymaker. I expect he will bounce back and be off this list next year.

Actually, several of these actors have had movies perform less than stellar in the box offlce recently. And with how much they likely get paid, I'm not too surprised.

Ok, i know that over the years we've all had our brains numbed to the enormous amount of money that movies make and we all just shrug it off as if a million dollars is a drop in the bucket. But the WORST person on this list is Will Farrell making ONLY $3.35 on every dollar paid to him in salary, and the guy gets paid likely about 15-20 million a movie, so he's making these companies between 50-67 million dollars per movie. THAT IS A LOT OF F^(#!NG MONEY people!!!!!! THat is not a disappointment to me, and the day we all start seriously thinking that it is, is the day we all are committed. i make 10 bucks an hour and would give anything to multiply that by $3.35 on every dollar. I'd give $3.30 just to multiply it by 5 cents.

And now i know i may be coming off as being a bit sensative about this, BUT IT'S 50 - 67 MILLION DOLLARS!!!! That is not bad. If someone turned my dollar ivestment into anything more than what it was, i;d be happy. you win at black jack and you don't complain it was only 20 bucks you won, do you?

And where is John Travolta or Robin Williams on this list. their movies suck and they make big money, there's no way they're making more on the dollar than these guys.

So if Will Farrell makes $20 mil a movie, and the movie earns $60 mil, hopefully the production costs didn't top that $60 mil or the studio lost money. Yes, that's a ton of money (I guess I'm numb to box office figures and just see them as a number now), but it can forecast a negative return on investment. I'd be willing to guess that studios are already seeing Will Farrell as a bad investment, or just start paying him less. Can't speak on Travolta or Williams, but yeah, they've been tanking at the box office too.
