Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at 12:10PM Marvel Planning 'War Machine' Spin-Off?
As the Marvel train moves full speed ahead toward the summer of 2012, the studio has slowly been formulating its post Avengers game plan. First came the anticlimactic news of Iron Man 3 in 2013. And now it looks as though the suits at the studio want to give the man in the silver suit a film of his own.
Rumor has it that Marvel has a pitch out to writers for a War Machine spin-off film. Now watch as the world shrugs with indifference.
Like I said, right now this is just rumor, but come on who didn't see this coming? Every actor in the recent Marvel film universe is required to sign a multi-picture deal which lets the studio cross characters into each other's films (the cameos), do their whole epic team-up thing (The Avengers), and lock actors down for sequels and spin-offs. And after the whole Terrance Howard debacle, the studio wouldn't bring in an actor the caliber of Don Cheadle if they didn't have plans for him.
But do we really need a War Machine movie? Don't get me wrong I love me some Don Cheadle and his scenes in Iron Man 2 as War Machine were some of the best in the film, but I don't think audiences will want to sit through two hours of his story. In my opinion it would be kind of like making a Robin movie after introducing him in whatever Batman franchise is running.
So I say find a way to work Rhodey into The Avengers, Iron Man 3, and the inevitable Avengers sequel in 2017. There's no need to waste a tentpole on a War Machine movie when the studio can make Captain America 2, Thor 2, a Hulk film with Mark Ruffalo, or dip into their wealth of untapped characters and character rights that are coming back to the studio. There's plenty more to keep busy with.

This'll be just like the time where they announced they were making a Venom spin-off. Or a Magneto spin-off. Or a Deadpool spin-off. Or a Gambit spin-off. Or a Silver Surfer spin-off. Or a Black Widow spin-off.
Oh that's right, THOSE MOVIES DIDN'T HAPPEN. What makes you think that this one somehow will?
