AFI's Top Ten Movies of 2010

Today, the American Film Institute selected their list of the Top Ten films of 2010. This list isn't assumed to be a lock for any sort of Oscar potential, but it shows where some potential interest is. While I think we've been blessed with an above normal year in movie quality, I'm not sure this would be my top ten. I know our own Joel Murphy will be putting out our Get The Big Picture top ten list here in the near future, but that doesn't mean we can't discuss the AFI's list.

While I don't disagree that the movies on this list aren't deserving, I can't help but feel there are some that are more deserving. Where's Scorsese's Shutter Island? Rabbit Hole? Or even Blue Valentine, which just got it's NC-17 rating reversed? Or even Kick-Ass? Yeah, I know I might have just opened up a can of worms with the last one, but I stand by my opinion that it was a great movie. Rabbit Hole and Blue Valentine might be more about the actors' performances than their overall movies, so hopefully the actors at least get a nod come the rest of the awards season.

Now, I haven't seen 127 Hours, Winter's Bone, and The Kids Are All Right. I've heard some mixed things, which made me think they wouldn't have this much support. While I'd love to hear and discuss anyone's thoughts on the above list, I'm particularly curious to hear from people that have seen these three. Are they good enough to be on the AFI's list, more than others? Keep in mind the AFI is particular towards American made movies, where they won't give awards to movies when its production or some other element isn't American. That's why a movie like The King's Speech isn't up there.

I am happy to see Toy Story 3 on that list. Really goes to prove that quality can come in any form, even animation. And glad to see The Fighter and True Grit up there, hopefully shows that they're both worth the wait.

I think this is a pretty damn good list. It would almost be my list for the ten oscar movies if i were picking them, only instead of "The Kids are Alright" Which is WAY overhyped, i'd throw in "The King's Speech" (Though it can't make AFI'S list, being european made or whatever) And instead of 127 hours, which is a decent movie, I'd throw in "The Ghost Writer" (though again, that one can't make the AFI list because of its Euro roots) There's also outsiders like "Get Low" , "Somewhere" and "The American" that could've snuck in, but those movies don't quite live up to the ten listed above.

So overall, i think AFI hit the nail right on the head with this one. Sure if we were doing a list of favorites, and most entertaining movies there'd be movies like "The Book of Eli:", "Shutter Island" , "Easy A" , and MAYBE "KickAss" But that type of list is left for you guys to do. So get to it, i can't wait to see your best of lists. Maybe there's a few movies i missed during the year that you can get me interested in seeing.
