Wednesday, December 15, 2010 at 7:04AM Danny Boyle Confirms 'Trainspotting' Sequel
In an interview with Cinematical during his 127 Hours promo tour, director Danny Boyle had this to say when asked about the possibility of a sequel to his 1996 breakout film, Trainspotting: "It will happen, I think."
Begbie knew it'd happen all along.Boyle went on to clarify that while he definitely thinks we'll see a Trainspotting follow-up at some point, he has no timeline set as of yet. Such a film would likely be based on Irvine Welsh's sequel to his Trainspotting novel, Porno, though it would be a looser adaptation according to Boyle. He described the latter as "not a great book in the way that Trainspotting, the original novel, is genuinely a masterpiece, I think, as a piece of writing. But we have been doing some work on it, and it's got potential, yeah, for sure. And when the moment's right, I think we will approach it."
I don't know about the rest of you, but even in vague and indeterminate form this news gets me pretty excited. Trainspotting is, to me, one of the defining films of the mid-1990s, a period that produced a lot of unique and groundbreaking independent films. Not only did it introduce most of us to Ewan McGregor, but it also featured all-around strong performances from the rest of its cast as well, most notably Robert Carlyle, Jonny Lee Miller, and Ewen Bremner.
Oh, and it was also the feature film debut of Kelly Macdonald, who has a very memorably bare scene with McGregor. (Note for those who prefer to see men naked: there's plenty of Ewan on display, too.)
Back to sequel, which may or may not end up being called Porno (depending, I supposed, on just how loose the adaptation ends up being). Boyle said that the main things he's waiting on before diving in are for the cast to age a bit more, and also for all of their schedules to line up. "We have a very strong idea that it would be a wonderful thing to reapproach, to do again, when they have aged clearly into a mid-life kind of crisis, basically," he said. "They're not quite there yet, I don't think."
So that means a bit more waiting, but it certainly sounds like Boyle is counting on it happening sooner or later. Personally, I can't wait.
