Monday, December 20, 2010 at 8:02PM Roger Ebert's List: Top 10 Movies of 2010

Yes, it's that time of year once again. With Christmas less than a week away and the end of the year right around the corner, it's time to reflect on the year that was in film. Our Get the Big Picture lists will be up soon, but in the mean time, a few critics have already released their Best Ofs.
Last week Roger Ebert, Pulitzer Prize winning film critic and former host of At the Movies, released his annual Top 10 films of the year list. Hit the jump to check out his choices.
The Best Feature Films of 2010:
1. The Social Network – “it is an early observer of a trend in our society, where we have learned new ways of thinking of ourselves: As members of a demographic group, as part of a database, as figures in…a social network.”
2. The King's Speech - “Tom Hooper’s filmmaking itself is crafted in older style, depending on an assembly of actors, costumes, sets, and a three-act structure. The characters project considered ideas of themselves”
3. Black Swan – “uses powerful performances by Natalie Portman and Vincent Cassel to represent archetypal attributes”
4. I Am Love – “Tilda Swinton created masterful performances that were largely unseen because of inadequate distribution.”
5. Winter’s Bone – “risks backwoods caricatures and avoids them with performances that are exact and indelible, right down to small supporting roles.”
6. Inception – “brilliantly visualized movie.”
7. The Secret in Their Eyes – “Soledad Villamil and Ricardo Darin have presence and authority that makes their scenes together emotionally meaningful, as beneath the surface old secrets coil.”
8. The American - “The film sees dispassionately, guards its secrets, and ends like a clockwork mechanism arriving at its final, clarifying tick.”
9. The Kids Are All Right – “In a comedy with some deeper colors, the film is an affirmation of–family values.”
10. The Ghost Writer – “Roman Polanski’s best film in years”

I respect Roger Ebert, his accolades, and everything he has done for film criticism 100%. That being said, I've never fully agreed with his end of year lists or even his regular reviews. For this list specifically, I'd add a few of the Special Jury Award films to the top 10 therefore bumping some of his choices. But hey, he's the one with the Pulitzer and I just graduated college, so really what do I know?
If you want to check out more detailed explanations for his choices, head over to Ebert's website at The Chicago Sun Times. Whether you agree with the man or not, like all of Ebert's articles, it's a good read.

Let me just say this. I have never really agreed with Ebert much either but now i know he is a complete moron. I just saw The Fighter tonight and it is a complete masterpiece in my mind. He does not even have it on his list. Maybe he hasn't seen it yet but i just don't see how this movie misses anyones list this year. Plus maybe it would be wise to wait for the end of the year considering True Grit still has to come out
By this point, movie critics like Roger Ebert have already seen every movie that is coming out this year (including) the ones that come out this week. Thus the reason for his list being released now.
Note to self: See The King's Speech.
The American and The Ghost Writer were both a little slow, but I thought they were incredible.
Toy Story 3????
