One of my favorite end of the year lists is the most pirated films of said year.  I just think it's fun to look at what movies people want to see but don't want to pay for.  Typically, the top spots on this list go to huge budget pictures (last year's #1 was J.J. Abrams' Star Trek reboot) and this year is no different.

Piracy is nothing new to the entertainment industry (thank you Shawn Parker), and it's not something I can say I haven't partaken in, but it really is on the verge damaging the film industry the same way it did to music.  It may not seem that way to the untrained eye as 7 of these 10 films all made over $100 million worldwide even after making this list, but those 16+ million downloads of Avatar translate to over $250 million in additional ticket sales.  While I admit that is an example of the rich getting richer, look at Kick-Ass.  A film praised by most audiences and critics, yet it barely broke even at the box office all but killing any hope for a sequel.  At least The Hurt Locker got its due from The Academy, because that was another great film that was almost delivered a deathblow by piracy.

I'm not here to preach about the dangers of piracy because like I said earlier I do my fair share (although mine is mostly music, sorry Lars Ulrich) and it's the last thing you guys want to hear.  But here's something worth thinking about: 90% of film audiences today complain about the lack of originality in the movies Hollywood puts out but when we don't pay to support those original films because we can watch them at home with one click of the mouse, it's our own fault Hollywood doesn't listen to us.  Just wait and see when Scott Pilgrim vs. The World ends up on next year's list.

Netflix and OnDemand can also take some of the blame for taking away ticket sales, people know that the movie will be in their living room in 4-6 months. I don't know if the studios get any more money if their movie is rented a million times on Netflix but never bought.
