First Look: Official Photos from Anderson's 'Three Musketeers'

Today brings us the first photos from Resident Evil writer/director Paul W. S. Anderson’s upcoming The Three Musketeers.  From the early photos, it looks a lot like...well...every other Three Musketeers movie we’ve ever seen.  Dirty streets, the Musketeers in a row, plus D’Artagnan.  The only difference here is that D’Artagnan is played by a very young actor (younger than Chris O’Donnell in the 1993 film, he was 21), in this case 18-year-old Logan Lerman.

I promise you, that's a boy. He's just real purty.

But there’s a few reasons not to discount this movie just because it’s familiar ground. For one, it’s got a parade of interesting actors making up the supporting cast.

Anderson’s re-using Milla Jovovich as M’lady De Winter, star of the Resident Evil franchise, and though she’s hardly award winning, she’s performed well in action films, particularly in Luc Besson’s The Fifth Element.  He’s also got last ceremony’s Best Supporting Actor winner Christoph Waltz as Richelieu, who’s quickly becoming our go-to-guy for Evil Incarnate.  His presence, and the addition of Casino Royale’s Mads Mikkelsen will definitely make for some serious villains.

Ray Stevensen, Matthew Macfayden, and Luke Evans will be playing the Musketeers themselves (you can see them in the photo.)  And Anderson’s also got Orlando Bloom in a supporting role as the Duke of Buckingham, who in the original plot, is targeted for murder by M’lady by Richelieu.  So the three solid UK actors might be slated to rescue Bloom, which will be a nice turn of the tables, since Bloom has been trying to play the arrow-wielding uber-hero in more films than are worth counting lately.

The supporting cast: all class.

So the picture doesn’t tell us much about the quality of the film, other than that, visually, it looks just like any other period-action film.  But the cast shows promise, and Anderson  can handle an action film, that’s for sure.  It just remains to be seen if he can handle an action film that takes place in 17th century France.

Logan Lerman should cut off that fake hair and go back to being the hot Jewish boy he was.

Wow, Logan might have quite the career ahead of him. Checking his list of credits on IMDb, I can recognize him in about half those movies. Impressive.

Hmm... it's hard to say. What will it be rated? I can't decide. We'll just have to see when either a trailer or the movie has arrived.
