Shia LaBeouf Interested in Oliver Stone's 'Pinkville'

We've got some interesting casting news in what has been an otherwise lackluster week for movie news.  I blame the holidays and Hollywood for being lazy.

According to IGN, Oliver Stone revealed on the audio commentary track of the Blu-ray and DVD releases of Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps that he wanted to resurrect his Vietnam War project Pinkville with Shia LaBeouf as his lead.   

Apparently, the two often discussed Pinkville on the set of the Wall Street sequel.  LaBeouf's interest coming from the fact that his father was a helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War, which makes sense considering he would be playing helicopter pilot Hugh Thompson in Pinkville. 

The story centers on the gruesome My Lai Massacre in 1968, where hundreds of Vietnamese villagers were killed by American soldiers.  Helicopter pilot Hugh Thompson put an end to the massacre by putting his chopper between the soldiers and villagers. 

Pinkville was originally slated to begin production in 2007 with Channing Tatum as Thompson, but got put on the back burner indefinitely due to the Writers Guild of America strike, with United Artists opting not to revive the project in 2008. 

It's a breath of fresh air to see Stone return to helm a Vietnam flick, after all Platoon was great. LaBeouf is a much better pick for the role than the mumbling Channing Tatum.  Stone's hiatus from the project must have given him time to see G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and change his mind on who should play Thompson. Ouch. 

This casting news isn't official and Pinkville is still in the development stages, though I'd be shocked to see the role not end up in the hands of LaBeouf.
