Monday, December 6, 2010 at 5:04PM Jon Favreau Says Marvel Wants 'Iron Man 3' as Sequel to 'The Avengers'

It's no surprise to see a director doing press for his/her upcoming summer blockbuster, but Universal has allowed writers extended access to director Jon Favreau as he works on post-production for next summer's Cowboys & Aliens. It's also no surprise that in addition to questions on Cowboys & Aliens, Favs has been fielding a lot inquiries on the Iron Man franchise and Marvel's plans for the future.
While everyone and their mother knows Marvel is building toward the 2012 release of The Avengers, very little is known about the superhero films' fates after the epic team-up. In an interview with MTV, the Iron Man director let out what he knew about the studio's plan and it all points to Iron Man 3.
When asked about the post-Avengers world, Favs had this to say:
"Kevin Feige, who’s been involved with superhero movies with Marvel movies since the X-Men films, is very aware of his path and how to weave [things together], so in theory, ‘Iron Man 3′ is going to be a sequel or continuation of ‘Thor,’ ‘Hulk,’ ‘Captain America’ and ‘Avengers’."
And, "in theory" this just kind of makes sense. Iron Man 2, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, and Captain America all added their own piece to The Avengers puzzle, and now that everything has been brought together 2013's Iron Man 3 will be the first film that has to deal with The Avengers fall out.
The biggest thing to take from that quote is the idea of "continuation" being synonymous with "sequel." So while we will more than likely see the "sequels" Thor 2, Hulk 2, and Captain America 2 everything after 2012 should be "continuations" of the film that came before it ultimately leading to the next "sequel" in The Avengers 2 (or Civil War if Marvel decides to go that route) in 2017.

I know more about his story based on fan sites and a few comics that I read when I was a child. After seeing this, it is safe to say that fans will not be disappointed, and their expectations will be blown away. I welcome a sequel with open arms, but if decides to return.
