Tuesday, December 7, 2010 at 8:04PM Blomkamp and Copley Set to Reteam for 'Elysium'
After his breakout success with District 9, we've all—if I can speak for all of us—been waiting to hear what director Neil Blomkamp would do next. While his feature-length debut left some obvious possibilities for a sequel, I'm happy to hear that he'll be treading new water for his sophomore effort. Sort of.

Blomkamp will be re-teaming with District 9 (and A-Team) star Sharlto Copley for his next project, called Elysium. Deadline reports that Blomkamp is currently shopping for a distributor, using a graphic novel to aid in his presentations.
Not much is known about Elysium as of yet; aside from the news that it'll star Copley, the only story details we have are that it's set in the far future on another planet, and it's "filled with many sociopolitical ideas wrapped up inside a Hollywood action film." Sounds pretty similar to District 9 to me, but I'm hoping this time Blomkamp can be a little more subtle with the sociopolitical allegory. (Don't get me wrong, I liked District 9, but the apartheid stuff was just a little too transparently on-the-nose for my taste.)
Elysium has been in the hopper for quite a while, it would seem. We first heard that Blomkamp was working on another sci-fi film over a year ago. It's impressive that the story details have been kept so tightly under wraps thus far, especially in 2010, and especially if Neil's got a graphic novel of it floating around.
