Wachowski Projects Update: 'Hood' Coming Next

Since 2008's generally disappointing Speed Racer, the Wachowskis—Andy and Lana—have had some time to consider what they'll do next. Finally it sounds like they've settled on their next project, called Hood, from a script that they've written. It's "a modern, urban take on the Robin Hood myth," according to THR.

This picture is almost as busy as the Wachowskis themselves.

With the screenplay completed, the siblings are now looking for actors, and the "insider" rumor is that Will Smith is their first choice to star. Everything else about the project has thus far been kept in strict secret, which is par for the course for the Wachowskis.

While I think that Smith could definitely pull off Robin Hood—he's always been good at the smiling, wise-cracking hero type—I do kind of have reservations about this angle, based on the limited information we have so far. I think it stems from being sick of the word "urban" being code for "black," but that's probably a discussion for another time and place.

This also means that Cobalt Neutral 9, the Wachowskis' long-rumored Iraq war-slash-gay love story, is going to be postponed. THR says that one's had trouble finding financing, which is probably why they're moving on to Hood in the meantime.

In other Wachowski-related news, at the Image Awards last week, Halle Berry let slip that her next role would be in a film with them, most likely Cloud Atlas. But if Hood is indeed going to be their next project, that's probably on hold as well. (Unless you think she was referring to Hood when she described it as, "sort of like they did for The Matrix, they have another really amazing idea that's sort of gonna stretch our brains even further"). Overall it sounds like the Wachowskis have been working on all 3 potential projects at once, and have finally decided on which one will get their attention first. We'll keep you updated as we hear more.
