Monday, February 1, 2010 at 9:35AM Fourth 'Bourne' Movie To Be a Prequel?
For once, I think the logic for a fourth Jason Bourne movie is sound. I never really got on board with another Matt Damon-Paul Greengrass flick, outside of just believing they'd do good work with it, because the story seemed to have a natural conclusion at the end of The Bourne Ultimatum. And, as I've said many times, it's really tough to beat that trilogy; there's really no dead spots.

So continuing the same way would be profitable but unnecessary. Now Damon tells Empire that the producers might go a completely different direction, no doubt sparked by the departure of Greengrass several months ago. “There’ll probably be a prequel of some kind with another actor and another director before we do another one,” Damon said, “just because I think we’re probably another five years away from doing it – we’ve got to get a script.”
Regardless of whether or not Damon and Greengrass return, by his estimation, seven or eight years after Ultimatum, a prequel is the exact right idea for this franchise. In fact, it's a wonder we didn't think about it before. As I said, Ultimatum gave us a great conclusion, but there's still how all of this stuff got started for Bourne, presented in flashbacks throughout the trilogy, as well as where it went wrong for the character before he was dredged out of the ocean.
I suppose they can use plastic surgery to explain the different actor, and I don't have any problem with it. That can be rolled in the narrative without any trouble.
The other upshot here is that without Greengrass, there might not be a Matt Damon Bourne movie ever again. This affords everybody time to see if it's worth doing again and what concessions would need to be made on each side to make it happen. Again, I'm not sure we need to see where Jason Bourne goes next, but I'm all about seeing where he went first.

Where does Niki fit into all of this? Were they somehow connected in past and Bourne just hasn't figured it out yet? I think this story can still have some unforseen little twists. All they need is an out-of-the-box script writer.
I also am curious if Niki & Bourne have unfinished business or if they were in some kind of relationship he was totally unware of.
I agree. There was totally something going on between bourne and niki. Just think back to that scene in the coffee shop. There was an awkward moment between them and niki said "so you really don't remember anything?" and Bourne replied "no", and you could tell that niki was visibly upset. So I guess we'll find out if they make the fourth movie. I hope. Please.
The Bourne movies have been outstanding and they left it open for a fourth and even fifth. I would like to see the relationship between Bourne & Niki develop. I would like to see Bourne develop into a active, "in the good graces of the CIA ", Operative, that works on past and current anti or counter terrorism operations that are taken from real world events. Bourne needs to be on the razor's edge. I would like to see Bourne make it to the upper levels of the "company" and a new operational black ops program be developed by him and Niki and Landy. They can call it the "Bourne Project" The Bourne movies have the ability to become the next "007ish" series of movie. But instead of changing actors when "007" gets too old. AGAIN, have Jason Bourne, Niki Parsons and Pamela Landys' characters head up a special group of black op operatives, which keeps them all in the loop, but have the operative doing the missions. JUST A THOUGHT.
I also agree that Bourne and Nikki had some kind of relationship that he hasn't figured out yet. I think a prequel is a great idea but I have to say I really am not enthusiastic about the idea of a Bourne movie without Damon. I feel like without Damon and Greengrass, the integrity of the trilogy would be lost and I personally wouldn't be as interested in seeing the movie.
Obviously most of the previous posters did not watch the third Bourne movie where they reveal that Jason and Niki DID have a relationship prior to Tredstone and they reveal his true name! Maybe you should rewatch the entire series before jumping to conclusions.
Maybe they should call it "Before He Was Bourne"!!
