Wednesday, February 10, 2010 at 1:02AM Christopher Nolan Saves the Day for Superman
Yesterday, the online world was all aflutter with the prospect of Christopher Nolan not only coming back for that third Batman movie, but also as a kind of life coach for the next Superman film. Wait...what?

Yep, we waited a while to bring it up because Deadline Hollywood had earlier jumped the gun a touch on David Goyer leaving his show FlashForward to concentrate on Batman 3: Tokyo Drift. Goyer's taking a reduced role on the show so he can focus on films, true, but he has plenty of things going on. So we wanted to make sure there was no retraction six hours later...and so far so good: Nolan will apparently be bossing Supes around.
But what does that mean? I read it as Warner and DC not having confidence in where to take the character, and I can't say I blame them. They whiffed on Superman Returns and Nolan is in a very unique position among directors. He's one of the few who gets to call pretty much all of his own shots, making the films he wants to make how he wants to make them on his own schedule. And certainly, he has found a way to make a comic book franchise find an audience, so the thought is he's worth the investment to brush up the Man of Steel.
Nothing wrong with that theory, and if nothing else, just having Nolan's name attached makes this a better prospect than it was 48 hours ago. He's not directing, he won't be writing, and he probably won't produce. He's kind of a creative shaman or something.
I still contend that Superman is just not right at the moment. Music goes in cycles, types of TV shows come and go, and I think that has to be true of superheroes, too. I can't think Batman's new success has nothing to do with the decade we just left behind. Dark times, dark hero. But maybe I'm wrong.
A tonal change has been discussed before for this franchise and it sounds like that's what all interested parties are trying to make happen. "It would definitely not be a followup to Superman Returns," one source told Deadline. "We learned a lot from the last movie, and we want to get it
right this time."
