Monday, February 15, 2010 at 6:06PM Quentin Tarantino What Ifs His Dream Western
You kind of have to take a believe-it-when-you-see-it approach with Quentin Tarantino. His mind is always spinning and he often gets ahead of himself when talking about projects he'd like to do. To wit: He told me in 2003 his next movie was Inglourious Basterds, so...there you go.
Now Tarantino seems to be zeroing in on another ambitious project, but who knows if it's actually the next thing he does. In a new interview with The Daily News, QT says it's high time he does a western. "But rather than set it in Texas, have it in slavery times. With that subject that everybody is afraid to deal with. Let's shine that light on ourselves."
Adds the writer-director, "You could do a ponderous history lesson of slaves escaping on the Underground Railroad. Or, you could make a movie that would be exciting. Do it as an adventure. A spaghetti Western that takes place during that time. And I would call it 'A Southern.'"
Well, first of all, an Underground Railroad film is overdue, although it probably wouldn't be the most serious examination of those issue if Tarantino made it. Still, even with his style, that would potentially be a great bit of filmmaking.
It doesn't sound like Tarantino has a script already, just a few set pieces he'd like to weave into it. I like where he's headed, and he's got to kill some time before the final chapter of Kill Bill, so this is as good as anything, I suppose.

I was at the double feature of Pulp and Basters at the Egyptian last week where QT spoke after the films and mentioned he would love to do a western. Listening to him talk about everything from his hatred of movies being shot digitally rather than film to making a romantic comedy and taking the genre out from the abyss was a great experience. His range is endless. Now tomorrow I'm headed to the Aero for a screening of A Single Man with Colin Firth speaking at the end of film.
A QT western rom-com would be...interesting, to say the least. If there was ever a man to save the category, he could pull it off.
rom-com
please no
let him channel Peckinpah
that would kick ass
