'I Spit On Your Grave' Remake Heading to Theaters

I always like to reference the good Mr. Ebert when the topic turns to "I Spit on Your Grave. It's exploitastic to the nth degree, and yes, I think I just coined the word "exploitastic." In addition to being a terrible film, it's borderline repugnant, and that's coming from a guy with a very high threshold for that sort of stuff.

"I Spit On Your Grave is sick, reprehensible and contemptible. Attending it was one of the most depressing experiences of my life. This is a film without a shred of artistic distinction. It lacks even simple craftsmanship. There is no possible motive for exhibiting it, other than the totally cycnical hope that it might make money."

Ebert goes on an on in his original review, now 30 years old. But it's relevant again because Anchor Bay plans to release a remake of the film theatrically, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Hell, there's more than a plan: Distribution has already been secured in the US, Canada, Australia, the UK, and New Zealand. About 18 months ago - when the remake was first introduced by CineTel, a trusted name in horrible movies - the company's president, Paul Hertzberg, said that the kind of violence we're used to now is about where the original was in 1978, so it's time to "ratchet up the shock factor." I guess that means more genitalia mutilation. Fun! Exploitastic! The film is slated to arrive in the fall, and then it will pop up on DVD next spring. Damn it - I called this a film. Sorry.
