Sunday, February 28, 2010 at 2:16PM First Teaser for Disney's 'Rapunzel'...er...'Tangled'
From this 30-second teaser, it doesn't look as though Disney is giving the Rapunzel story a new twist hen Tangled opens up later this year. And that's surprising, because with the recent name change from Rapunzel to Tangled, it sounds like a different mood somehow.

That worked for Hoodwinked and the Little Red Riding Hood story, and of course, Shrek kind of turns a lot of fairy tales on their head. But Tangled comes across as a pretty straight reading of the classic tale. I guess there's room for that, too, but then why not just call it Rapunzel?
Aside from that little fit of overthinking it, the limited amount of animation we see here is very identifiable as House of Mouse stuff. We'll see a lot more of this in the next few months, but here's an appetizer. That's Mandy Moore as Rapunzel, by the way.

Disney eventually made money with The Princess and the Frog, but that's not a movie that needed to cost $100 million. This one is kind of in the same arena, and it opens around Thanksgiving, so Disney will probably amp up the marketing a little bit more on this one to give it an easier road.

According to the article that says, "why not just call it, "Rapunzel," that is something I like to know too. But the reason why Disney changed the title from "Rapunzel" to "Tangled," because they are trying to get the boys interested instead of just girls. Also, they are aiming for a modern comedy than a classical way. But just because fairy tales with girlish titles does NOT make it a girls movie only. The people that complain about fairy tales with girlish titles need to understand that those stories are written for FAMILIES to enjoy, learn, and love. I love the title logo that Disney made for Rapunzel, now they replaced it with Tangled. And to tell you the truth, I find it misleading even though it was supposed to sound funny. The good news to Disney is that I understand why they called it, "Tangled," but I just do not have the taste buds on that title. If I ever created my own version of, "Rapunzel," I am going to stick to that title and perfect the story to make it more interesting than typical. Besides, Disney does it many times, why not Rapunzel? What they are doing according to my belief is kind of ridiculous, a little funny, but ridiculous.
If Anything...
I think they should use `Tangled`as a sub-name, kind of like Pirates of the Caribbean: the Black Pearl, that way people would know that there is more to the story then just `Rapunzel,Rapunzel let down your hair`, but at the same time i keeps it`s fairy tale roots and in addition is also respectful to Walt Disney and the Grimm Brothers, like it could be something like `Rapunzel: the tangled years` or `Rapunzel: A tangled tale of epic proportions` or `Rapunzel: prepared to get tangled`
the options are endless, and in my opinion it`s a very ideal compromise.
I don’t mind that they changed it from Rapunzel, I still love Rapunzel the character and I’ll be in those theatres come november if they change the name to ‘Hairy and the Bandit’

I am so looking forward to this movie when it comes out on dvd! I think it comes out in March. What I like about the Rapunzel character is that she was already a Princess and she wasn't sitting idle waiting for some Prince to come and rescue her, she instead kidnapped the Kingdom's thief. She was much stronger than she thought.
