Cheadle: No 'War Machine' Spin-Off from 'Iron Man'

Don Cheadle, who might be a less physical screen presence than Terrence Howard, nevertheless replaced Howard as Jim "Rhodey" Rhodes in the upcoming sequel Iron Man 2. You probably read about that; it was in all the papers. Rhodey, of course, becomes War Machine to Tony Stark's Iron Man, and we'll see that in the sequel and probably beyond. However, the actor says you shouldn't hold your breath waiting for a War Machine spin-off. For starters, I doubt Marvel would ever be aware that you took such a potentially risky stance, and for a movie, no less. But more importantly, Cheadle says he just doesn't think Marvel wants that movie. He tells The Coventry Telegraph, "There's always the possibility that if [Iron Man 2] does well, it can spin-off, because obviously there's a different character and a different motivation with War Machine than there is with Tony Stark," Cheadle acknowledges. "People have asked but no one has mentioned [the spin-off] as something that's happening." "Hopefully, if it does well, there will be another with the same people. But there won't be a spin-off," he adds. Well, I'm all for that. Too many damn comic book spin-offs based on what is a limited amount of quality films in the entire genre over the past decade. Keep him in Iron Man; that's fine. Maybe he shows up in Avengers. But to give him a spin-off, especially with the way Deadpool got one (you know, the character won't have anything to do with the Wolverine story that introduced him), just seems like overkill.
