Bale, Bardem Lead Terrence Malick's Next Cast

Whoa, slow down there, Terrence Malick. You only made one movie between 1974 and 1997 and you're on pace to give us three films in seven years. What gives?

Malick, the mercurial and often reclusive filmmaker who probably means more to modern audiences for the ruminative war movie The Thin Red Line than for his earlier work, made The New World in 2005. It was probably a failed experiment but the cinematography and the original score are fantastic. He's also wrapping up the Brad Pitt film The Tree of Life, which is due out later this year (sometime). And now Malick is gearing up for what The Hollywood Reporter describes as a romantic drama.

The untitled film will star Christian Bale and Javier Bardem, which is great if you don't want your film to have any intensity whatsoever. Just kidding. And because it's a romance, Malick has snared Rachel McAdams and Olga Kurylenko. Yeah, not bad.

Bale and Bardem are very well-known quantities. I didn't like McAdams in Sherlock Holmes, but that's not her fault. Any actress would have gotten in the way there. Usually, she's good enough. And I'll say this about Olga Kurylenko, and not for the first time: Marvel might regret not looking at Kurylenko to play Black Widow in Iron Man 2. Just about a dead ringer for the character with a dye job and I'm not sure ScarJo gets you what you need there.

We'll probably see Tree of Life before this new movie gets going; The Reporter indicates a fall start date. So what does that mean for Batman? Who knows. It usually takes Malick about half a year to shoot a movie, so that should free Bale up around April or May of next year at the outside.

We've said for as long as there have been discussions about this that there's no way Warner puts a third Nolan Batman movie in 2011, and that it will wait until summer 2012. This production wouldn't get in the way of that, and in fact, may cement it.

Right. It is something else. I make that mistake every time.

The Thin Blue Line is also the seminal Errol Morris documentary. But I digress.

Looking forward to another Malick film. I wish he made films more often, since the last time we saw him was some 5 years ago. Solid cast so far.

The Thin Blue Line is also a rather funny TV series with Rowan Atkinson playing a police chief.

Anway, I personally had trouble watching either The Thin Red Line and The New World.

I felt that they lacked any form and structure and also looked amateuristic. I hated the cinematopgrapgy of The New World. And I love cinematography, it's the biggest thing for me when I watch movies.

Personally, I just think that hyping Malick is one of those received truths that movie buffs use to show off an separate themselves from the hoy-polloy.

Generally speaking, I like Emmanuel Lubezki's cinematography, and to me, it worked really well in The New World, although the story in that film sure did get lost.

Wow what a cast, just marvelous....Im not thee biggest Christian Bale fan to be honest, but they worked together so Malick wants to go back to him especially after his absence & Bale's surge, so I dont fault him too much, but I'd rather see another lead.....

But Ill tell you all right now, look out for Bardem in this film, I think he'll come out the star & best performance of the cast, in the bunch I think he's clearly the craftiest, can't wait ....

We NEED MORE MALICK!!!!!

I like the rules behind the cinematography of The New World, they are like a new "Dogme 95" but more flexible.

But I don't think it worked in that picture and I think it's because of the general lack of structure.
