Saturday, February 6, 2010 at 3:55PM Streep Rumored for Russell Brand's 'Arthur' Remake
I was just discussing this with a friend the other day: Who in the world could do John Gielgud justice in the Arthur remkake? Russell Brand from Forgetting Sarah Marshall is revamping the Dudley Moore role, and I'm not sure how I feel about that, but he's certainly going to bring something to it. But Gielgud? One of the great actors ever and one of his most comedic and most memorable roles? That's the whole key.

So, my friend and I recited a few of Gielgud's great lines and shook our heads over the whole thing. Well, who knows whether or not this is real, but it would sure answer that question above. The Daily Star (via Digital Spy) says that Meryl Streep is in the running to play Hobson (or whatever the character will be called in the new installment).
The dreaded "a source says" report of the story claims, "[Brand] wants a woman to play Hobson, saying it would make the dynamics really interesting."
It used to be, nobody saw Meryl Streep movies. She'd put on an accent, put herself through the paces, get an Oscar nomination, and that would be the end of it. But she's big business now. Streep trailed only Sandra Bullock as and above-the-title female star in 2009, and that's coming off Mamma Mia, one of the world's biggest hits in 2008. So regardless of whether or not there's truth to this or even if it's a role Streep should play, she might sell tickets, just as she has for a few years now.
In that case, it makes sense to pursue her, although playing a supporting role to Russell Brand may not be a good way to get Academy Award nomination number 17. But she could certainly pull off a role very few others could.

Colin once again you impress me with your thoughts upon film/acting & I'am again reminded as to why I visit this blog....
Yes, Gielgud is too one of the greatest actors ever & I'am glad you know that lol
Anyhoo,,,,to be honest Brand in this role is soooo far fetched I don't know whether to laugh at such ridiculous news as if Meryl will play opposite this fool in a supporting role or cry b/c they want to resurrect & desecrate a classic.....
I think this is the most imaginative and smart move that either actor could make.
Russell has already won over extremely talented veteran actors. He will be featured in a future Shakespeare movie. Go to Imdb.com to see.
Brand is amazingly perfect for this role. This has been in the works for a while now and when I first caught wind of the remake - it made a lot of sense.
Ms. Streep can do make gold out of anything.
I agree with Sean. This film should be left alone and shouldn't be ripped apart by the likes of Brand and other money-hungry fools. I don't think it matters if he is 'perfect' for the role of not. The fact remains that this film is a classic and classic films should not be re-made just for the sake of these people making a quick buck off the back of it and ruining the brilliant little film in the process.
