'Saw VII' Now Shooting, Director in an "Unreal Fog"

Part torture porn, part soap opera - that's what the Saw franchise is these days. Ever since Paranormal Activity gave Saw VI an Tyson-Spinks beatdown at the box office last fall, things just haven't been the same in Camp Jigsaw. And yet, they're still the same: Saw VII will be released the weekend before Halloween this year, just like clockwork.

The real fun - for observers - began about a month ago, when Saw VI director Kevin Greutert was hired to make Paranormal Activity 2. The folks at Lionsgate quickly jumped in, despite VI being the least successful movie in the franchise, and invoked a contractual clause that forced Greutert back in the fold for VII, which will be released in 3-D.

The best part of this, of course, is that Greutert had obviously chosen to make another movie, but now he can't. You know how you can tell when a hostage is reading a prepared message because an off-camera gun is pointed at his head? Greutert is currently in the "They're treating me well" paragraph of his statement.

"It's hard to believe, but I start rolling high-res 3D video on [Saw 7] tomorrow morning," Greutert told a House of Jigsaw forum yesterday. "It's still an unreal fog to me having one week to prep the most expensive Saw film of all."

That shouldn't be swept under the rug, by the way: The guy has had no time to prep for this movie, a sure sign of clear thinking by Lionsgate, which already had director David Hackl on board for months prior to the pissing match.

"We've attempted a comprehensive rewrite on the script since I got here, but it's tough," Greutert expressed. "The sets are built, the traps are built, the storyline is set, and any major changes mean throwing out existing stuff, and it's hard to find the time, money and will to do things a different way." "It has not been a picnic, but the crew is working hard, and I am as well." Sounds so promising, doesn't it?

Please oh please let this be the nail in the coffin of this floundering franchise!!! Maybe we'll get lucky and get a feature-length documentary about the making-of this flick that'd be more interesting than the film itself (which has worked out well for the past several Troma films)
