Direct-to-DVD 'Death Race' Prequel Gets Its Cast

I'm not certain what an efficiency expert does at the corporate level, but Universal should hire one to make sure it's not just hemorrhaging resources. The direct-to-DVD prequel Death Race 2 is forging ahead, with a cast I wouldn't mind seeing in a real motion picture. First: The prequel's called Death Race 2. Cut it out. How does the prequel come after the original (or in this case, the remake of the original) numerically? Another version of the title is Death Race: Frankenstein Lives, and I sure hope they choose that. Prequels shouldn't have numbers in the title. Heat Vision Blog says that Sean Bean, Luke Goss, Ving Rhames, Danny Trejo, and Lauren Cohan co-star, and at least three of those names are good to have in a supporting cast for a major movie. So...why not just make a theatrical film with them - even this one - instead of spending and spending on a DVD-only release? These things apparently make money, but I can't see how. Uni put out Smokin' Aces 2 on home video in January, but it's only made a couple million bucks. Where's the profit margin? Are these things remotely worth it? I can see if you're Anchor Bay or - shudder - the schlockmeisters at The Asylum, but Universal has a huge infrastructure that probably shouldn't have to endure such weak products year in and year out. Having said that, I enjoyed the Jason Statham Death Race for what it was, but it didn't even do that well in theaters, so how in the world is this the best use of everybody's time and money?
