Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at 2:47AM 'Captain America' Casting Carousel Version 6.0
At this point, The First Avenger: Captain America is less a superhero movie than a soap opera. The most recent development is the casting, which has not been very inspiring, but it has been ever-changing. A couple weeks ago, John Krasinski from The Office emerged as one of the front runners for the role. At the end of last week, Krasinski still stood but half the other names had dropped off.
Then, Tuesday happened. Fox reported that Krasinski was the man, that Marvel really wanted the Office star to play Captain America, which I don't get one iota. That seems like they're just reaching for something that isn't there. But he was reportedly the favorite.
Later yesterday, Deadline said that not only was Krasinski not in the pole position, he was out of the running completely. So who knows. The new list of candidates includes an old name that I support fully: Garrett Hedlund. I think he's the way to go. Chris Evans, who's already played a Marvel hero in those stupid Fantastic Four movies, remains a possibility, too.
Here's where it really gets strange. Deadline also says that one of the reasons we may not get A-list movie stars for Cap is the salary and the multiple film commitment that's required. For the first movie, Marvel is offering $300,000, which...is complete horseshit. Marvel ran into this with supporting roles in Iron Man 2, but, really? Is it worth this much lowballing? And Marvel would like the new Captain America to sign a nine-picture deal. So says the Deadline report.
If you need more reason to throw a grenade at this one and run, Dane Cook recently Tweeted that he has auditioned for the role, and he sounds serious. Of course, I can never tell when what he says is a joke because he's never funny, but assuming he's serious, I can only hope Marvel at least knows enough about what it wants to not go down that road.

WOW!!
First I was angry that they were screwing up Cap.
Then I became depressed.
Now I just laugh (to keep from crying).
This really shouldn't be this freaking difficult.
